Malaysia is an influential member of ASEAN, with a history of close and friendly links with New Zealand, stemming from Commonwealth ties, the Colombo Plan and shared security concerns.
Malaysia is NZ's second largest trade partner in ASEAN, its eighth largest export market and seventh largest source of imports. In addition to the AANZFTA, New Zealand and Malaysia have also just negoted a bilateral FTA. These will provide a further basis for growth in goods and services trade and investment.
The Government of Malaysia is continuing efforts to boost domestic demand to wean the economy off of its dependence on exports. Nevertheless, exports - particularly of electronics - remain a significant driver of the economy.
